If you believe you’re living in the last days and you believe you’re moving towards that event, you’re going to be very suspicious and skeptical of anything that seems to undermine individual rights and individual liberties, and anything that is going to give more power to the state.

Except evangelicals were all-in for the Iraq War and the Patriot Act, oppose a constitutional Right to Privacy, and they support a coercive government designed to impose its own value system.

Evangelicals oppose Obamacare because it was proposed and passed by Democrats.

I also think a basic point is that the American church is, by and large, pretty well off. Always has been. So not suprisingly its interests have pretty much coincided with the interests of the haves rather than the have-nots, on matters ranging from Civil Rights to healthcare.

I think race plays a bigger role than apocalypticism for issues like Obamacare and Civil Rights, even US support for Israel.

So, Silliman (aptly named…) argues that belief in End Times theology encourages people to become more politically active opposing things like the ACA and the United Nations because they smack of governmental overreach “as foretold” ??? This just does not make any sense. If evangelicals believe that the End Times are nigh, why would they bother opposing, resisting or trying to slow down the inevitable, ordained by G-d, plan for humanity? Aren’t they just supposed to accept that the Antichrist is going to take over and hope that they qualify for the Rapture? If they believed Obama was the Antichrist (and many claimed that he was), shouldn’t they have voted for him to hasten God’s plan? They seem to support Israel’s role in the Mideast so as to help bring about the Second Coming——and lord knows they don’t do it out of love for Jews.

Jesus will Rapture all true believers out of this world, they’ll just disappear, they’ll go up to heaven with Jesus, and then with the loss of Christian influence in the world, Satan will have free rein to take power through a political leader, called the Antichrist, who is then going to rule over the world for seven years. This period is called the Tribulation. Antichrist rule will lead to a series of wars, which will then culminate with Jesus coming with an army of saints and fighting the battle of Armageddon, in the literal land of Palestine. Jesus will defeat the Antichrist, vanquish evil and then establish a new kingdom.

Nah, they oppose the ACA out of hatefulness because that is what their grifty cults really market: fear and excuses to hate people. They revel in hating Obama, liberals, feminists, gay people, minorities, and anyone else who disagrees with them.

The gleefulness of their hatred is just about the most repulsive thing I can think of and they consider it virtue….
